Consider the Blessings of Feeling Gratitude
Appreciate What You Have…You Will Get More of What You Want
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, being grateful is on my mind…
I’ve noticed that people often think about their problems in life, and what they’d like to change. But how often do we stop and feel gratitude and think about how lucky we are to have what we already have? The answer for most of us is, we don’t do it enough!
I think about the wisdom in Joni Mitchell’s song, “Big Yellow Taxi”, in which she says,
You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.”
I also think about Sheryl Crow’s song,“Soak Up the Sun”, in which she sings,
It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you’ve got”
As people living in this world, we get all worried about problems in our lives. So often, those problems become foremost in our thoughts and we can become consumed with them. Then what happens is we tend to forget to focus on the positive that’s goin on all round us.
I want to be clear. The Angels and I are not advocating that we should all become complacent and just settle for whatever is without trying to change anything. Far from it!
The message here is that if we fail to be grateful for the blessings we already have, then even when we get more of what we’re after in life, we’ll tend not to appreciate those things either!
It just makes good sense to appreciate what you have. Many of the things you now have that you take for granted are things you once longed for, and now they are yours! But once you have what you once wanted, it seems to be human nature to go on to the next thing, and fail to appreciate what you already have.
I’ll give you an example from my life:
When I was 12, I wanted a slim, blue princess phone in my bedroom more than anything in the world. I already had blessings from my mom, God and the Angels – for instance, a very nice bedroom, which I should have been grateful for. And there was a phone in the living room I could use whenever I wanted, but I wanted the Princess phone!
I asked my mom to give me a Princess phone as a birthday present. She was reluctant because we really didn’t need another phone, and she was worried that if I had a phone in my bedroom, I might rack up big long distance bills. When I assured her that I wouldn’t do that, she agreed and had it installed for my birthday.
Before I had the Princess phone, I remember thinking that if I just had that phone I’d be the happiest girl in the world, and I’d never need anything else in order to be happy. That was a bit extreme, but remember, I was only 12 at the time.
Once the phone was installed, I loved it for awhile. But after a few months, I realized I wasn’t completely happy, and still wished for other things. I was shocked!
Of course this is normal for a young girl. It was one of my lessons in life that taught me that material things can never, in and of themselves, make me happy. After awhile, I learned to reframe the experience.
I appreciated my mom for her kindness and generosity in saying, “yes”. I also realized that getting the Princess phone was a desire that had become manifest through God and the Angels, and that helped me to ponder the principle of, “Ask and ye shall receive”. – Not always from my mom, of course, but also from God and the Angels.
Try This Exercise in Gratitude…Now close your eyes and think for a moment…
What circumstances do you have in your life right now that you’re happy about?
-
- Are you happy about where you live?
- Are you happy about people you know?
- Are you happy to be healthy?
- Are you happy to be in one piece?
- Are you happy to have made it this long in your life while others have been less fortunate than you?
Let yourself think about the things that are going right for you. Now, notice how you feel…That’s happiness!
Now open your eyes.
What good is it to think about what’s going right for you?
For one thing, it allows you to enjoy what you already have. It also allows you to have a happier frame of mind. And with a happier frame of mind, manifesting more of what you truly want in life will probably be a little easier.
Now that you’ve spent some time pondering what’s right in your life, notice that you have a positive feeling within yourself right now.
Feeling good about your gifts and accomplishments is a good foundation on which to build your future goals.
Now think…
What would you like to accomplish that you haven’t already?
- Would you like to read more books?
- Would you like to start a garden?
- Would you like to spend more time in meditation?
- Would you like to give more service?
- What would you like to do?
Notice that when you take the time to feel gratitude to God and the Angels for the things you already have, it becomes easier to imagine that you could get more of what you want in your future!
I believe that life is a gift, and every day, every hour we are alive is an opportunity to learn, and to grow. So just remember if you want things to go the way you want in the future, begin by being grateful today to God, the Angels and Life for what you already have!
